  • I seem to be having this same issue on my Mac after installing a new SSD. Now I'm locked out of my iLok licenses and can't open it up (on the SSD anyways - still works when I start up from the old drive - not what I want to do though). ILok support at lest for me seem to be giving standard answers that have not helped.

Follow these steps if you are having trouble activating and installing Pro Tools 11. Before you do anything, make sure you have an iLok 2 (iLok is a USB dongle that stores your software authorizations). Pro Tools 11 is not compatible with iLok1. Do not attempt to install the software until you have done all the steps below.

Setup and Creating an Account

1. The first thing you will want to do is remove any previous version of Pro Tools you may have via the instructions found in the Installation Guide for that version.

  • It is possible to have Pro Tools 10.3.6 or higher and Pro Tool 11 installed at the same time. Please click here for more information.

2. Next you will want to download the latest drivers for any hardware you will be using. You can do this by visiting the manufacturer’s website for any hardware you have and searching for the latest drivers.

3. The next thing you want to do, if you have not already, is create your Avid Account. You can do so at by clicking here.

4. Next, if you have not done so already, create an iLok account.

5. Once your Avid and iLok accounts are created, log into your Avid account. On the Main Page, click on Activate & Download Your Product.

6. Enter the activation code that you received when you purchased Pro Tools (either on a card or through your Avid account)and click Download Now.

7. Next you will need to enter your iLok ID. Please note that the iLok ID is NOT printed on the iLok key.

8. After you enter your iLok ID, click continue. You will be asked to enter your personal information. This is required for the registration process. After you complete this section, the installers will be available in your Avid Account in the Your Products section. If you’re stuck, check out the video below:

Install Pro Tools

9. You are now ready to install Pro Tools. If you bought a hard copy, insert the DVD into your computer. If you bought an electronic copy, you can download the installer from your Avid account as stated above.

If you’re on a Mac:
  1. Open the Pro Tools disc or disk image
  2. Drag the Pro Tools application icon onto the Applications folder within the disk image.
If you’re on Windows:
  1. If AutoRun is enabled, a mini-browser appears. Select Install Pro Tools to begin the installation. If AutoRun is disabled, locate and double-click Setup.exe, and then select Install Pro Tools.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions.

10. Before launching Pro Tools for the first time, need to register your iLok to your account and then transfer your license to your iLok. Log into your iLok account and download the iLok License Manager Client. You can use this to register your iLok and download the license to your iLok. See the videos below:

Now that you’ve successfully installed Pro Tools, you can go back to the Downloads section in your Avid account and download the AIR Creative Collection.

Note: To ensure all the components of your Pro Tools system communicate properly with each other, start them in the following order:

Starting up:
  1. Make sure all equipment (including your computer) is turned off
  2. Make sure all volume controls for outputs are turned down
  3. If you have an expansion chassis, turn that on
  4. Turn on any external hard drives and wait about 10 seconds for them to spin up to speed
  5. Turn on any control surfaces
  6. Turn on any MIDI interfaces and devices or synchronization peripherals
  7. For systems that require external power, such as an HD I/O or 003, turn them on. Wait at least 15 seconds for the audio interface to initialize
  8. Turn on your computer
  9. Launch Pro Tools
Shutting down:
  1. Quit Pro Tools
  2. Turn off or lower the volume of all output devices
  3. Turn off your computer
  4. Turn off hardware with external power supplies
  5. Turn off your Pro Tools audio interfaces
  6. Turn off any expansion chassis
  7. Turn off any MIDI interfaces and devices or synchronization peripherals
  8. Turn off any control surfaces or workstations
  9. Turn off any external hard drives
