This is a fantastic simulation strategy game that focuses on the most interesting and mysterious of all business - the mafia business. That's right. In this intriguing game, you are a head of the mob in the fictional Chicago suburb of New Temperance in the Prohibition era, the era of Al Capone. You have to take matters into your own hands arrange weekly jobs, that range from bribery to arson and murder. And this is not an easy task to do, no sir! You have to be determined, dangerous and persuasive. Very persuasive. You have to also be respected. You can follow your men and see how they follow your orders. When your chain expands, you have to recruit new people to do better. There are several ways to win the game. You can go straight and become a law abiding citizen, get elected mayor, become the only crime organization in the game or destroy every other gang in the town (the most fun part). The game is truly fantastic, and it's not easy. The graphics are very nice and detailed, envisioned in a nice isometric view that is very practical. If you like games where you play the bad guy (such as Syndicate), this game will truly be a treat. Recommended!

Take care of the business

As a boss of a mafia familiy in a city which includes about 5.000 citizens it's your job to take care of the business. You have to plan your weekly jobs such as bribery, robbery, house bombing etc - the kind of stuff the mob usually do. After finishing your week plan the game goes over to a simulation style where you can see how your folks following your orders. In this part you can also interact. I loved this game and played it many hours. Every fan of good simulation will be right served with it.

I am using the version of Gangsters Organized Crime from GOG.

Problem

The problem with Gangsters Organized Crime is that when the game starts on Windows 10 all the buttons are blank.

Solution

After some troubleshooting I was able to figure out that DDrawCompat was able to partially fix this issue. It was able to restore the text to the buttons however there were still a few problems. First of all 'gangsters.exe' only loaded the system 'ddraw.dll' and I was unable to get it to load the local 'ddraw.dll'. After running Process Monitor I found out that 'dsound.dll' could be used for this if I hooked the 'ddraw.dll' API's. However, a second problem was that DDrawCompat only hooked the DirectDrawCreate and DirectDrawCreateEx API's but for Gangsters Organized Crime the DllGetClassObject API needed to be hooked also (see this thread for more details).

The third problem was that all the other the text on the game (besides the button text) was black, which meant that it blended into the background and was almost undecipherable. For this I had to make some changes in the Fullscreen option of DxWrapper to refresh the screen each time a new page was loaded (see this code change here).

After applying these fixes the game works pretty good on Windows 10. There are a couple of minor issues, such as: 1) the screen will flash briefly after switching pages, 2) during the configuration of the game the scroll bars remain fixed in place and don't refresh after their value changes and 3) the courser icon looks too large when using display custom scaling options (see Menu misalignment on G:OC fix #4). I may look into fixing these issues later.

Installation

  2. Unzip the files to your Gangsters Organized Crime installation folder (where the 'gangsters.exe' file exists).
  3. If you are using Nvidia disable G-Sync/Vsync for this game (see here).
  4. Start the game and enjoy!
